God's Greatest Desire is Intimacy with You

When I contemplate the serenity I experience as I spend time in prayer I am overwhelmed at times with God's love and peace. It's a time when He is my Abba Father (Daddy) as I can crawl into His lap knowing I'm safe and loved unconditionally no matter what's happening in the world around me. It's a time to pause, feel loved, comforted, and receive new revelation as He gives me better understanding of who He is and my relationship with Him.

 

As I read a devotional from Jesus Calling by Sarah Young this morning my heart was nudged again that intimacy with His children is God's priority...

"Do not seek me primarily for what I can give you. Remember that I, the Giver, am infinitely greater than any gift I might impart to you. Though I delight in blessing my children, I am deeply grieved when my blessings become idols in their hearts. Anything can be an idol if it detracts you from Me as your First Love."

 

I reflected back on how often my prayers have been for God to do this and God to do that. It might be a certain job I want, a vacation I want to take, or a necessity of bills to be paid on time.  I might go so far as to justify that I'm asking Him to bless me so He can be glorified as I give Him the credit for all the blessings He bestows upon me.

 

As I pondered this devotional I considered how much I cherish time with people who are important to me. My love language is quality time so I feel loved when people who are important in my life choose to spend time with me. I treasure the time to create memories and deepen each relationship that comes with sharing with one another the things that are going on in our lives. The joy, the struggles, the miracles and all the feelings that go with it. These are the moments that are closest to my heart.

 

As I meditated on the devotional the question arose, how would I feel if the only time the people I loved reached out to me was when they wanted something and once they received it they walk away not coming back until they needed something else. My heart broke with pain and a sense of loss that the relationships had no real love and intimacy and made me feel empty.

 

As I considered God's greatest desire to be intimacy with His children I got the sense of how He must  feel when a child calls out to Him only in a time of crisis or pain wanting Him to fix it with His miraculous power like a magic genie popping up and giving three wishes. We were created for intimacy. God wants us to walk with Him in the cool of the day and share with Him all the things happening in our life, from the smallest instances to the biggest challenges we experience. God wants to walk with us each step of the way so He can love, encourage and guide us according to His will and ultimately have success in our lives. Even when it seems like we're fighting battles we didn't ask for He wants to fulfill our hearts desires.

 

Imagine you wanting to be a part of someone's life and they choose not to engage with you. You want to love them, encourage them and spend time with them and yet the only time you hear from them is when they need something you can give them.

 

The amazing love of our God gives us such grace to come to Him any time no matter the circumstances and He loves us the same yesterday, today and forever. I urge you to spend time with Him. Experience the depth of his love that can only come be seeking Him. It truly is the greatest fulfillment we will ever experience simply because it is why we were created.
